every group has one, everybody knows one, some people even are one: the flounder. every group has a bottom feeder. they are person that somehow got into a group even though nobody likes them. they are the one that gets ripped on the most, they are the one that freeloads the most, they are the one that everybody would easily leave behind if they had the chance to. every group has a flounder. it is an unavoidable aspect to having a group of friends. there has to be one that nobody likes. the best part is that each person thinks that someone else in the group likes them or was originally friends with them. each person thinks that it was someone else in the group who was somehow the flounder's "in." when this topic somehow comes up after a few months of people not liking the flounder its always the same reaction. every person shrugs their shoulders and says "i thought he knew you" or "wtf man hes not my friend."
sometimes this can be one of the best experiences a group of friends can go through. the actual conversation where they realize that everyone thinks the flounder sucks and the upcoming week or two to treat the person like total crap until they get the point. its hilarious to witness some of the events that take place. everybody ignores the flounder, insults the person without any reason and laughs as the flounders face contorts under the emotional damage that is being done to them. the rejection is relentless yet the rest of the group relishes in it.
what would be truely amazing is if the flounders of every group formed together to make their own group. this would be awesome because there would then be a flounder among the flounders. to actually be this person would be some sort of horribly amazing treat. the ridiculous negativity would cancel out and this person would probably become one of the coolest people ever. i feel like i have known a person like this. he was hilarious in every act he made and was continuously ridiculed from everyone. simply being in his presence made everyone feel better by comparison and he was continuously cast from group to group as he floundered his way through variuos schools of fish. somehow after a few years of this he became rather popular and has had some success in years of late. it is funny to trace his line through high school and where he lies now. perhaps if his rap career goes well you will all get the chance to hear about him some day.
